Write It Down

Write It Down

Do you ever come up with those mnemonic devices to keep that list of things to remember at the forefront of your mind before you forget everything? That is me to a T. I live in a world of sticky notes hoping to keep track of everything in life with the fear that something might go amiss if overlooked. Pretty ironic for someone who prides herself on having a good memory. Now we’ve all heard of the common phrase “FOMO” – The fear of missing out. We could create our own in this situation: “FOFT” – The fear of forgetting things. Now let’s apply this to our walk with Christ.

I treasure those good catch phrases from the pastor’s sermons on Sundays or a devotional I’m reading at the time. Sometimes a friend will bring up a verse that they’ve been meditating on in their life. Other times, I will find myself alone in the scriptures having an “Aha” moment with how God has truly proven himself to be a master poet with the symbolism in the text pouring over several books in the Bible. It can be too easy to think to yourself, “Wow, what a good word!” and then move onto your to-do lists and schedules and distractions. When someone asks me how the Lord has worked in my life, I can easily point to my change in careers and how my current position was handpicked by Him. God shows up in so many circumstances though, so it’s important to document them for the sake of strengthening your own faith. Keep a journal. Write them down. Be transparent.

Now my family members will be the first to admit that writing is not my first love. It was my least favorite activity in school. I would cringe at my brother’s stories of his 40+ page essay assignments in law school. Yet, in my own way, I kept a notebook that I carried with me as a child with which I used to record family conversations. My dad had quite the punch lines, which were often repetitive in my notebook. At the heart of my distaste for writing, I feared the looming writer’s block. However, when I think about how God is using me in my circles of influence at work, church, etc., it’s easy to have enough material to write on continually. Sometimes I find that my mind is going faster than my hand on the page.

I’ve always loved the verse in Luke after the shepherds have arrived to see the baby Jesus in the manger, “ But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart” (Luke 2:19). I wonder what Mary would have written down in that moment if she had a journal with her? Perhaps, she would had have described the shepherds’ reactions as they looked upon the Savior. Maybe she would have written down pages of thanksgiving at all that she was able to be a part of for God’s glory.

Keep a record of what God has done in your life and meditate on it. Let your own words be an encouragement later on in life when you need those reminders. Write it down.
